“The journey is not over yet. But this book is now complete, and it’s time to take stock. I’ve assembled the words; you’ve put together your portraits. It’s time to look at our work afresh, to retell the story of our journey. We have put down our tools. We had to. We had to stop at some point, go to print, show what we had done.

I’m talking to you as a way of talking to everyone. You, the photographer with whom I’ve traveled this road for over a year. You cringe at the very word: journey. But let me make clear what I mean. This was no mere caprice; we didn’t travel randomly. It’s true that we traveled far and wide. We saw the dust of Bamako on the River Niger. We saw the geysers spit their fire on a clear blue day in a frozen landscape near Reykjavik. We saw the stones of Naples weeping under the grime of the ages. We saw the purifying cascades of Hawaii.

But, above all, we saw our story in the eyes of those we had come to meet. We reached out to them, with the intention of giving and receiving, with the intention of sharing. We were on a quest.”
